Old Time Recipe To Prevent Colds

For thousands of years, over 5,000 to be exact, chicken soup is the answer to the most basic of questions. How can I avoid getting sick? Mothers, grandmothers and these days fathers cook a large batch of chicken soup, with much love, and serve to their families to ward off colds and other ailments. The secret? Garlic.

Garlic is a natural anti-biotic so it makes sense that when you create a healthy immune system your body can fight off whatever germs float around.

I have done this with my family almost since the time my kids were born. Until age 5 they thought every kid had a cup of chicken soup with dinner. But it worked. My kids rarely picked up what every else did. With 7 cloves of garlic in the soup, the germs took one look at my kids and ran the other way.

'Till this day from Oct. -April ( in Cleveland it's a along winter) every Friday night they eat chicken soup.

Here's the recipe in case your family didn't have this tradition:

3-4 pieces of chicken ( any type)
3 large celery stalks
3 large carrots
1 onion
1 parsnip
7 cloves of garlic

Slice the garlic first and let it sit for 10 minutes before putting into the soup-- it starts the medicinal process. Boil the chicken in water ( filtered or distilled) and then add the rest of the ingredients. Cook for 2 1/2 hours.

Enjoy!
